What is a DWG file?
DWG has been AutoCAD's native format since 1982, which makes it one of the oldest file formats still in daily production use. It is best known as the standard for 2D drawings, but a DWG can equally hold 3D solids, surfaces, and meshes. The format is versioned by AutoCAD release, so older installations sometimes need files saved back to an earlier DWG version.
For manufacturers, DWG matters because that is where the plant already lives: floor plans, utility layouts, and equipment drawings accumulated over decades of AutoCAD work.

Facility and industrial engineering teams keep factory layouts, floor plans, and site drawings in DWG. Machine vendors with AutoCAD-based workflows also deliver equipment models this way.
How to import DWG files into Moicon
As simple as four steps, from file to factory floor.
Step 1
Upload your model
In the Moicon dashboard, select Add asset and drag and drop your .dwg file.
Step 2
Let it process
Moicon translates DWG files through Autodesk Platform Services, the service behind its support for more than 70 formats. Translation time depends on the size and complexity of the model and the current service load.
Step 3
Name and organize it
Give the asset a name, add a thumbnail so it is easy to spot, and file it under the categories your team uses in the asset library.
Step 4
Place it in your project
Open your project and drop the asset into the viewport. From there you can position, clone, and scale it like any other asset in your twin.
Before you upload
A few DWG-specific details that save a second upload.
- Most DWG files upload as they are. There is no export step to run in AutoCAD first, and 3D content comes across along with everything else.
- Very large 3D assets are the exception worth knowing about. Exploding the asset in AutoCAD before you upload gives the translator a simpler structure to work through, which starts to matter once a model gets big.
DWG FAQ
How do I prepare an AutoCAD 3D model for Moicon?
Usually there is nothing to prepare. Upload the DWG as it is, 3D content included, and Moicon handles the translation. The exception is very large assets, where exploding the model in AutoCAD first is worth the extra step.
What is the difference between DWG and DXF?
DWG is AutoCAD's native binary format. DXF is the companion exchange format Autodesk documented so other applications could read and write the same drawing data. Same world, different purpose.
Can a DWG file contain 3D geometry?
Yes. Although DWG is famous for 2D drawings, it fully supports 3D solids, surfaces, and meshes, and AutoCAD has modeled in 3D for decades.
