What is a IPT file?
IPT is the part format of Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk's parametric mechanical CAD system aimed squarely at machine design. Like other native MCAD formats, an IPT file stores the modeling history: features, sketches, and parameters, so the part remains fully editable in Inventor.
Inventor sits inside Autodesk's wider ecosystem alongside AutoCAD and Vault, so IPT files are common in organizations that standardized on the Autodesk toolchain for both drafting and 3D design.

How to import IPT files into Moicon

Upload your model
In the Moicon dashboard, select Add asset and drag and drop your .ipt file.

Let it process
Moicon translates IPT files through Autodesk Platform Services, the service behind its support for more than 70 formats. Translation time depends on the size and complexity of the model and the current service load.
Step 3
Name and organize it
Give the asset a name, add a thumbnail so it is easy to spot, and file it under the categories your team uses in the asset library.
Step 4
Place it in your project
Open your project and drop the asset into the viewport. From there you can position, clone, and scale it like any other asset in your twin.
IPT FAQ
Do I need Inventor to see IPT files in Moicon?
No. The file is translated in the cloud on upload, and the result is viewable in the browser like any other asset in your twin.
What is the difference between IPT and IAM?
IPT is a single part; IAM is an assembly that references parts. The split mirrors SolidWorks' SLDPRT and SLDASM.
IPT or STEP, which should I upload?
Either works. Uploading the native IPT skips an export step; exporting STEP produces a neutral file that is easier to pass along to others afterwards.
